Green Painting Program: Environmentally Friendly Health Choices
Alpha Painting Solutions is excited to provide Hampton Road’s
only Environmentally Friendly Painting Program. We feel that it is important
for our clients to have a choice, “a choice you can feel good
about, a choice you can live with”, a choice to use paint products,
materials, and methods that are simply a good idea when ever possible.
We feel very strongly that there is no room to compromise on quality
so we have sought out products that can rate among the best professional
products available. What we have found is that there are great alternatives
for paint that far exceed the governments VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)
standards that have been put in place to begin to eliminate unhealthy
fumes and the continued depletion of the ozone layer.
Paints consist of a resin or binder, pigments, and a carrier. They
also consist of solvents, toxic metals, and VOCs that can cause smog,
ozone depletion, and indoor air quality problems with negative health
effects. These unhealthy ingredients “off-gas” into the
air during the application and curing of paints, and even after the
paints are dry for quite some time. Naturally, the higher the level
of VOCs, the more unhealthful the paint might be. The impact on indoor
air quality and your family’s or employee health is the primary
issue with VOCs in paint, rather than the impact on the environment.
Whichever way you may fall on the Global Warming issue, there is no
denying that the environment and our health has suffered with heavy
toxins. There is also clear evidence that these chemicals that we have
put in our homes, that our children are growing up in, has contributed
to a higher percentage of asthma and other respiratory illnesses among
society today. With this same long term chemical exposure, many have
developed MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity), Sick Building Syndrome,
and it seems everyone has hay fever or increased allergies these days.
Solutions:
• We offer a great selection of Zero VOC and non-toxic paints
and materials that meet our high standards for quality. Remember,
VOC standards, although a step in the right direction, is a government
standard and can hardly be considered comprehensive or healthy. Many
"Zero VOC" products on the market reduce emissions that
cause outdoor air pollution, but still contain many unregulated toxic
ingredients (such as formaldehyde, ammonia, acetone, exempt solvents
and odor masking agents) that cause indoor air pollution. That means
the same chemical that we use to embalm our dead, and used to soak
frogs in high school science class, that we are putting on the walls
of our home. Whenever possible our clients have the option available
to them to choose a healthier product from manufacturers that look
for more natural ingredients for their paints.
• We recycle and reuse paint thinners and solvents as another
step we can take to reduce toxins from going into our ground water
or down the drain.
• Searching for environmentally friendly sundries such as tape,
caulking, etc.
• "We use air filtration purifiers to ventilate spaces and other
methods to reduce dust and fumes.
